During his career  John researched plant chromosome structure and behaviour, the mechanisms and processes of evolution, sex-determination in plants and birds, the history of modern evolutionary thinking, botanic garden history and significance.   He also published about 100 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals, with book chapters, edited conference proceedings and book reviews. Over 100 popular articles in newspapers and magazines.
