We are delighted to have the opportunity to visit the National Collection of Perry Pears and the National Collection of Gloucestershire Apples (in association with the Gloucestershire Orchards Trust) plus a developing collection of local plums.
The visit will include an introduction by National Collection Holder, Jim Chapman. Jim says his 'latest obsession' is the conservation of 'original populations' of fruit that are descended from the earliest wild/feral varieties but are being lost to new varieties, which sounds right up our street!
The Hartpury Orchard Centre was founded 25 years ago is set in grazed orchards. Visitors are welcome with to walk through the orchards to mature wetlands and a developing coppice area.
The visit will be rounded off by a glass of Perry and some delicious cakes.
Ticket price will be £5 to be donated to the Hartpury Heritage Trust - please bring in cash on the day.
If you would like to join the visit, it would be appreciated if you could let Stevie know not later than Sunday 16th August, so we have a reasonable idea of numbers for catering.
