By kind permission of Maria-Antonietta and Robert Dudley-Cooke

The gardens were started when Robert and Maria-Antonietta Dudley-Cooke acquired the property in 1982. At that time the garden was nothing more than an overgrown steep slope falling away to St. Mawes. In creating the garden their guiding principle was the desire to create tranquility and beauty in harmony with nature. Lamorran is a sub-tropical, Italianate inspired garden of around 4 acres, on Cornwall’s Roseland Peninsula. The sheltered position of the garden, on a south-facing slope, means it remains mostly frost-free. This microclimate allows the cultivation of an extensive range of plants, including many from the southern hemisphere. The garden is known for its collection of palms (over 200) with 45 varieties and over 100 tree ferns, mainly Cyatheas. At the time of our visit, Tibouchinas, Brugmansia, Gingers, Hydrangeas, Salvias and Abutilons should be flowering, plus other exotics.
There will be an introductory talk by the owner/Head Gardener, after which you will be free to explore. The top half of the garden is relatively easily accessible, but the lower garden will require care. The paths are well surfaced but the garden does descend via steps towards the coast so stout footwear and walking sticks may be helpful.
For those who wish to add to the visit Trewithen Gardens near Probus, are an option.
