Description:
First described in 1836 (Allg. Gartenzeitung) from eastern Brazil, it is native from Bahia to Rio de Janeiro, where it grows as a scrambling shrub in wet Atlantic rainforest. Herbarium records from Ilhéus, Bahia confirm its presence in humid forest understories. It is a neotropical begonia with woody, climbing stems adapted to shaded tropical conditions, scrambling through vegetation. It produces broad, textured leaves suited to low light and high humidity in warm, moist forest habitats.
