Strelitzia reginae ‘Kirstenbosch Gold’
Synonym: Strelitzia reginae ‘Mandela's Gold’
Description:
Yellow-flowering Strelitzias appeared sporadically worldwide, but seeds rarely bred true unless two yellow plants were crossed. At Kirstenbosch in the 1970s, curator John Winter began a 20-year program of hand-pollination and selection. By 1994, the stock was sufficient for horticultural release, first as 'Kirstenbosch Gold' and renamed Strelitzia reginae 'Mandela’s Gold' in 1996 to honour Nelson Mandela.
