Aloe peglerae
Description:
Known as Vuurpylaalwyn in its native South Africa, this succulent plant is named for the botanical collector Alice Pegler. Growing on rocky slopes in Magaliesberg and Witswatersrand, it is IUCN Red Listed (EN) and falls under CITES Appendix II. Its incurved, glaucous leaves form a stemless rosette 30 - 40cm across. The leaves bear spines which darken to red brown with age. Plentiful red flowers are borne on single cylindrical spikes, attracting bird and mammalian pollinators in the wild.
