Description:
First described in 1783, this distinctive South American species is native to the Falkland Islands and the Magellan region of southern Chile and Argentina, where it grows in cool, windswept landscapes. Early botanical explorers, including Commerson and Captain King, collected it from these remote southern territories, helping introduce it to science. It forms dense cushions of tiny overlapping leaves edged with fine white hairs, creating a compact mound dotted with small yellowish flower umbels.
