Plant Guardians

Amorphophallus hirsutus Teijsm. & Binn.

Description:

A rare tuberous aroid from West Sumatra, West Java, and the Nicobar Islands. Its pink, hairy spadix remains within the dark purple spathe, mimicking a carcass with a rotting-flesh odor to attract flies. The ~25 cm inflorescence grows close to the ground; leaves reach 80 cm with speckled petioles. Flowers once the tuber is ~10 cm. Prefers light shade, well-drained soil, slightly moist even in dormancy, and is toxic if ingested.
