Iris ‘Dorothea’ (IB)


Description:

Bred by William John Caparne, Guernsey c.1888, received RHS AM 1916. Profuse, early flowering. Large, flat-opening flowers in shades of deep lavender fading to lighter, with deeper lilac streaking and mottling on falls.  A notable landscape artist, Caparne was commissioned by Sir Michael Foster to paint all known garden irises, some works are preserved in the Royal Horticultural Society archives. Received the Foster Memorial Plaque in 1936, and the Caparne-Welch Medal is named in his honour.
