Acanthus montanus
Description:
This shrubby perennial is native to seasonally dry areas of Western Tropical Africa, growing in forest understorey. It is categorised as Least Concern by the IUCN. Its foliage is attractive, with glossy, dark green, deeply lobed leaves. Double-lipped pink flowers bloom from upright spikes, with plants reaching up to 6 feet when flowering. Used by many native groups, its traditional uses include the treatment of boils. Research has examined its anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties.
