Phlox paniculata ‘Katarina’

Synonym: Phlox paniculata ‘Katherine’

Description:

Introduced c.1922–25 by Martin Viette, who emigrated to the US in 1921 to teach at Cedar Hill School, Brookville, NY, under Theodore Havemeyer. Havemeyer was a lilac enthusiast, who had worked with French breeder Victor Lemoine, introducer of phlox cultivars 'Eclaireur' and 'Iris'. Named for Havemeyer's wife, Katherine, this early-flowering cultivar bears lilac blooms with pale shading and a large white eye, 3.1–3.3 cm across, on plants 90–95 cm tall. Viette opened his own nursery in 1929.
