Description:
Introduced aroun 1845 by John Horsefield (1792–1854), a Lancashire handloom weaver who became a self-taught botanist. He learned through independent study and local working-class botanical societies that shared resources and books. He founded the Prestwich Botanical Society and later served as president of a larger north Manchester botanical group.
