Begonia scharffii
Synonym: Begonia scharffiana Regel
Description:
Native to the humid forests of southern Brazil, from Bahia to Rio de Janeiro, and described by Joseph Dalton Hooker in 1888 and named in honour of Dr. Carl D. Scharff, who discovered the species in Brazil before its introduction to Europe. It forms an upright, bushy plant with distinctive zig-zag stems, large hairy green leaves with rich red undersides, and clusters of delicate pale pink flowers that provide long-lasting ornamental appeal.
