Echinocereus rigidissimus subsp. rubispinus
Description:
This small columnar cactus is native to the Sierra Oscura in Western Chihuahua, Mexico. It is a prized local form distinguished by its red-purple and purple-red stigma lobes. Plants tend to clump when mature. These cacti do not grow central spines but have over 30 pectinate radial spines per areole which give the plant its characteristically colourful appearance. Flowers are large (up to 10cm across), showy and bright magenta with a white throat. Reputedly cold hardy to -12° C if kept dry.
