Cattleya coccinea
Synonyms: Sophronitis grandiflora, Sophronitis coccinea ‘Grandiflora’, Sophronitis coccinea var. grandiflora
Description:
Long-lasting, scarlet flowers 3-7cm with no fragrance. These pseudobulbous epiphytes grow at high altitude amongst the tropical montane cloud forests of S, SE Brazil, and NE Argentina. This habitat, known as elfin forest, is characterised by shortened tree growth which is driven by climatic conditions. Flowering of this species usually occurs in spring. In cultivation good airflow is required, along with cool to warm, moist growing conditions.
